Housatonic Meadows State Park
Sharon CT
Route 7

The weekend of 5/21 we visited Housatonic Meadows SP. The park is well laid out with sites on the river as well as wooded sites. The sites are closely spaced but still enough privacy to be cozy. The park has modern restrooms with flush toilets and showers. As with most State Parks in CT, alcoholic beverages are not allowed and it is well posted that possessing alcohol is grounds for removal from the park. The ranger station located at the park entrance is manned for most of the day. Pulling in we were told to find a site then come back and fill in the registration forms. There are almost 100 sites scattered through the park and we had out choice of about 80 empty ones. Still early in the season there were few campers there when we arrived late Friday afternoon. After choosing a site on the river we went back to register. The process was quick and efficient. The cost of the state parks is very reasonable (we paid $13 a night). Each site had a picnic table and fire ring. There are no hookups for RV's but for "dry camping" it is a wonderful place. They have water spickets spaced around the park as well as a gray water dumping station near the entrance. The Housatonic river is a great place for canoing, rafting and fly fishing. Located near by is an Orvis outlet and canoe rental. The river was full of fishermen so I have to assume the fish were biting. While there is little to do in the area as far as attractions, for a quiet time of camping it can't be beat. Conveniently located on scenic Route 7 it is about 15 minutes from the quaint village of Kent CT, featuring many small shops as well as Kent Falls for those that want to see scenery. There is a walkway that leads to the top of the falls for fantastic views.

For a quiet time with nature CT state parks can't be beat and Housatonic Meadows is no exception.
